Healing Minds Building Bridges

The Nembe Community Medical Outreach was implemented to improve access to essential healthcare services for vulnerable populations in riverine communities where preventable and chronic illnesses remain highly prevalent. The outreach provided free medical consultations, diagnostic screening, treatment, health education, and distribution of essential health supplies.

A total of 542 beneficiaries were reached, including children, teenagers, adults, pregnant women, and the elderly. Women represented 52.2% of participants, while men accounted for 47.8%. The oldest beneficiary was 93 years old, highlighting the broad community impact of the intervention.

Key activities included community sensitization on Lassa fever, maternal and child health, vital signs assessment, general medical consultations, optometry and dental services, rapid diagnostic testing for malaria, hepatitis B, and HIV, free medication distribution, mosquito net distribution, sanitary pad distribution, free eyeglasses, and dental scaling and polishing.

Findings from the outreach revealed malaria (30.4%) as the most common condition, followed by hypertension (20.3%) and respiratory tract infections (16.8%). Other identified conditions included peptic ulcer disease, diabetes, urinary tract infections, dental disorders, and optic disorders, reflecting significant gaps in preventive healthcare and access to routine medical services.

Despite challenges such as limited manpower, inadequate funding, language barriers, and insufficient prescription eyeglasses, the outreach successfully strengthened healthcare awareness, improved access to treatment, and promoted peaceful co-existence within the community.

The Foundation remains committed to sustaining and expanding similar interventions through partnerships and donor support. Increased funding will enable broader outreach coverage, enhanced diagnostic capacity, improved staffing, and provision of more specialized healthcare services for underserved populations.
